Description
Beta-Alanine is an amino acid used by muscle cells to synthesize carnosine. Immediate administration of carnosine would have no effect as its gastrointestinal absorption is negligible and it is more likely to be degraded in the circulatory system by specific enzymes.
The increase in carnosine after beta-alanine administration (greater than 80% increase after several weeks of administration) results in the normal capabilities of the dipeptide (β-alanine & L-histidine) reaching their full potential. Carnosine is partially able to reduce the effects of lactic acid on muscle, which results in improved athletic performance.
