How To Avoid Fungal Infections During Summer

Beauty and Health Advisory Board August 7, 2020 0 comments

Overview

While fungal infections can happen all year round, we can be particularly susceptible to some, such as thrush and tinea, during summer.

Fungi thrive in warm and moist conditions, making areas of the body that get sweaty in summer perfect habitats. Activities that are common in summer, like using public showers at pools and beaches, can also help fungi spread.

The most common type of fungal infection appears in women is a yeast infection.

Scientifically, Vaginal yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis) occurs when there is an overproduction of yeast (candida) in the vagina and causes an infection.

Here are three reasons why women are more prone to yeast infections during the warmer months – and what you can do to avoid the problem.

01.

Wet swimwear

Always take a dry set of clothes when you go swimming.

02.

Synthetic materials

Choose to wear cotton liners and underwear for a more comfort.

03.

Unhealthy diet

Maintain a balanced diet by getting plenty of nutrients from fruits and vegetables

Symptoms

Yeast infection symptoms can range from mild to moderate, and include:

  • Itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva.
  • A burning sensation, especially during intercourse or while urinating.
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva.
  • Vaginal pain and soreness.
  • Vaginal rash.
  • Thick, white, odor-free vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese appearance.
  • Watery vaginal discharge.

Ways to prevent a yeast infection:

  • Maintain a healthy hygiene of the sensitive area with the daily use of antifungal soap.
  • Use of vaginal suppositories to inhibit fungal activity and balance the vaginal environment.
  • Use of probiotics to maintain the vaginal flora.
  • Avoid using beach tampons during menstruation.
  • In contrast, using a menstrual cap protects you from bacterial and fungal infections.
  • On the beach we always use a towel and do not sit on the sand or sunbed directly.
  • Use your Diet as an ally as fruits, vegetables and yogurt shield the body’s defenses.
